The release of Wicked for Good makes this an ideal time to share a concept post I first drafted for The Noire Space (TNS) as part of my content writer application.

The application prompted me to consider what my first post for the Instagram platform would be. At the time, I was following the series @TheNoireSpace curated about season 7 of Love Island. The content poised a balance between pop culture, insightful discussion, and wellness for Black Women. Most importantly, it highlighted the importance of representing Black Women in popular media, emphasizing our humanity and diversity.

I determined that ****I would build on this examination of pop culture using moments on our screens. I would spotlight iconic films from the past three years that deeply resonated with me as a young Black woman.

The films I chose to highlight are:

  1. 🧜🏽‍♀️ The Little Mermaid Live Action (2023)

  2. 🪄 Wicked The Musical (2024)

  3. 🩸 Sinners (2025)

❣️ Also, a quick disclaimer that I still haven’t watched the new movie. I am hoping to do so soon in my Wicked t-shirt from the Olay x Secret Wicked for Good Beauty Lab pop-up. I posted a TikTok about the pop up experience that you can find here:

Hi, hello❣️ Today’s adventure brought me to the yellow brick road! I popped up at the Olay + Secret x Wicked For Good Beauty Lab. The wait was long & I didn’t reserve a ticket 🎟️ While I wasn’t able to get my hands on a full size body wash or deodorant, I’m happy to have experienced the pop up and meet new people! #wickedforgood #nycpopup

As a note, I was able to advance to an interview but was not chosen in the end. Still, I was excited for the opportunity to speak with one of the founders of TNS and I continue to indulge in their content.

Enough disclaimers… it’s time for the article!

Have you ever watched something that caused you to tear-up?

</aside>

The films I selected did not merely entertain: they reflected me, validated me, and at times, cracked something open inside causing me to shed tears along the way. At times, the impact snuck up on me. I’d laugh to disguise the tears, unsure how to express why these stories mean so much.

I’ll be reviewing works that offered radical representation, raw storytelling, and layered portrayals of Black girlhood and womanhood. I also believe that the most recent’s film role in shaping how we view our women is not spoken about enough.

This series is a tribute, a celebration, and a call to continue crafting bold, beautiful art. Because behind every tear and every triumph is a story worth telling.
